Project Description:
Located in the heart of the rural Northwest, this Idaho project is a true appreciation of the luscious backdrop. Overseeing the lake, the residence is in a primary location in terms of breath-taking views of the rural scenery. The residence is designed as a summer vacation house and the relationship to the outdoors is a crucial part of the design concept. In order to maximize the indoor outdoor relationship, the project incorporates large panel window systems that can completely bring the interior outside. Terraces and patios are an essential part of the design and work with the overhangs to create this effect of the indoor bleeding outside. Being an entertainer's house, the plan was designed in order to incorporate as much outdoor areas as possible. The courtyard design and the broken-up forms are due to this consideration. Circulation paths act as connections between larger forms that are very transparent. This transparency is meant as a way to engage the user with the landscape even on a daily basis in the house. Idaho sunsets that feel almost like an artwork came to life are captured with glass gable ends. The pitched roof alludes to the traditional countryside aesthetic while serving the function of protecting the structure during the harsh winter months of Idaho. The material palette is a perfect blend with the environment, integrating the project with the landscape. Appearing as almost a product of nature, the residence expresses its modernist characteristic in an elegant and subtle way rather than trying to stick out on purpose. The materials are locally sourced and sustainable, helping the house to become identified as a true native to Idaho. The remote location of the project implies a need for a large gathering of family/friends, sharing the same roof. The residence is a great spot for group meet-ups and family vacations. The central program accommodates this by providing large gathering spaces and dining/bar areas. The indoor/outdoor bar serves as a great symbol of entertainment opportunities. In addition to entertainment, this countryside project is a place of retreat and well-being. Recreation was gravely important in the project thus an indoor/outdoor gym, spa, sauna, cold plunge, and swimming pool were part of the design concept. The residents are encouraged to pursue good health habits and routines. The house is mentally healing in terms of being a place of gathering and socialization and physical healing through its amenities. This concept of retreat in the Idaho countryside was another important factor when coming up with the concept design. All aspects of the house that are modernized such as the trellises and sun shades were part of the overall design and were treated as an important factor in unifying the modern countryside look.

Project Description:
The design for integration framework is addressed in the project through its architectural style and material palette. The color palette of the project helps it blend in with the environment and its characteristic is showcased in a very elegant subtle manner. The broken-up form design also helps the building to be spread out and in a way that seems like less of a blocky look from the roof plan. The landscape bleeds into the house through the courtyard and connection points. The plan design does not take up the landscape but coexists with it.
The design for energy framework complies through the use of passive building strategies. The trellises and overhangs significantly reduce the interior temperature of the residence during the summer months. The sun-protected building has its windows oriented according to the path of the sun.
Design for well-being framework was important in designing the program of the residence. Designed as a summer retreat, the program allows for many recreational and healthy habit-inducing facilities. Some of these facilities include an indoor-outdoor gym, cold plunge, swimming pool, and spa.
The design for resources framework was crucial when planning for the construction of the building. Since the project is in a remote location there were many challenges regarding sourcing materials. Thus, the material palette of the building is naturally-sourced wood and stone. Not only does this make the building a true Idaho native, but it significantly makes the building more sustainable in terms of using available resources.
