Project Description:
Design for Integration - Planning Process
The design team worked directly with the District and different stakeholders to establish goals, define priorities and make value decisions throughout the design process.
Goals:
- Design a facility that inspires curiosity, discovery and promotes health and wellness.
- Replace the existing building with minimal infringement outside of the existing building footprint.
- Minimize the need for swing space during construction.
The new facility will be the "Front Porch" of the College, providing a new formal entry to this side of campus. The design is inspired by the physical education concept that movement skills, physical fitness and healthful living practices are elements of life that must be reinforced. The new P.E. Complex leverages its hillside location to cascade the program elements down the hill, allowing each one to maximize daylighting opportunities and to frame elevated ocean views. In turn, these spaces are all connected by a universally accessible circulation spine that puts these programs on display to building users and passersby, becoming a billboard of activity, and promoting health & wellness.
Program includes a competition gymnasium, locker rooms, team rooms, training & equipment rooms, dance studios, fitness center, classrooms, and administration offices.
The new P.E. Complex strikes a dialogue with the Santa Barbara campus vernacular by reinterpreting familiar materials and forms: cast-in-place concrete creates the durable exterior walls, finished in white to match existing buildings. The quintessential clay tile hip roof is inverted to provide a dramatic floating canopy where the rich texture of the material can be experienced from various protected exterior porches.
Design for Wellness
The new Complex changes the outdated introvert stereotype of a P.E. building into a lively campus hub where students, staff and community can be seen thriving together.
The design promotes a healthy community by leveraging active design concepts:
• The project’s streetscape is pedestrian and cyclist-friendly, tying into the campus’s larger networks, promoting active commuting among students and users.
• The feature entry stairs and top floor terrace provide attractive outdoor spaces for casual recreation and social activity during breaks.
• The building distributes shared programs vertically and links them by stairways. Doing so encourages walking and stair climbing throughout the day.
• Corridors are activated with natural light, outdoor views, and brightly colored walls.

Design for Resources - High Performance
Prevailing breezes, capturing ocean views and solar orientation were integral to the project’s design response, which is currently on target to meet LEED Gold level certification.
• pEUI of 7, an 85% reduction over baseline
• 30% better performance than T24 energy standards.
• Meets the 2030 Challenge.
• Air cooled water chilled central plant with VRF systems integrated into floor plates to maximize available roof
area.
• Roof mounted photovoltaic array offsets 70% of building’s energy use.
• lighting design meets LPD 2030 Challenge of 25% better ASHRAE 90.1.
• Ceiling fans incorporated in gym and fitness areas allow for wider range of temperature control
• Efficient plumbing fixtures reduce water use in the building by 35%
• 100% of storm water treated on site via bio-retention ponds.
• Mixed mode ventilation in lobby with operable partitions.
