Project Description:
Designed to attract independent retailers, encourage social cohesion, and boost local economies, SteelCraft Garden Grove is the most recent in a series of shipping container food halls for the SteelCraft brand. First of its kind in Orange County, the 20,000-square-foot, al-fresco, neighborhood dining experience is located adjacent to downtown Garden Grove with the desire to infuse new life in its aging downtown.
Twenty-four repurposed cargo containers are positioned around communal eating areas on a 1.8-acre lot along with a children’s play area, co-working space, upper-level patio, retro video-game arcade, pop-up retail and an organic garden. The containers house eleven curated vendors: craft food, coffee and beer brewers, dessert, retail and a winery (soon to come). The upstairs creative office space is 320-square- feet with an adjacent second-story dining patio that can be leased out for private events.
The re-purposed containers are cost-effective; they can be assembled quickly; they are well-suited for local, independent vendors; and have proven to efficiently transform underused parcels into thriving destinations. Every detail is carefully executed, including multiple cantilevered containers and a second-story balcony.
The video-game arcade offers games from the golden era of gaming and includes Ms. Pac-Man, Centipede, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2, among others. In the chef’s garden, passion fruit vines, citrus and herb ground cover are cultivated for restaurant use. The passion fruit is harvested by Honey & Butter restaurant as an ingredient for its macarons. The center of the garden is a raised area with a communal table set among herbs, spices, flowers, and seasonal vegetables and leased out for private events.

Project Description:
Steelcraft's purpose is to bring people together over food and drinks in a communal setting. The project is in Garden Grove, adjacent to the city’s downtown civic center and residential neighborhoods and the parcel of land was sold by the city to serve as a destination for the downtown community. The project has proven to be a successful draw for visitors resulting in a dramatic reduction in retail vacancies downtown.
While Garden Grove is a diverse city, with a sizable Latino population, its neighborhoods remain segregated. The city is also home to the highest concentration of Vietnamese in the United States. This culture draws people from throughout the region to enjoy Vietnamese cuisine, but its multigenerational population is interested in more diverse foods and communal spaces to bring people together. Steelcraft serves as a meeting point for all populations to foster this sense of community.
Built in 2019, Steelcraft provided relief during the pandemic for people to go out to eat and stay social and local because of its outdoor seating. The space features beer hall bench seating that is intended to inspire social interaction. The food choices are diverse at accessible price points to cater to a wider demographic. Over the past few years, it has become a space for all to gather, a meeting place centered around food and beverage, and to bring diverse communities together.
