Project Description:
This project was designed to fit into a densely developed, fully built out tract, replacing a 50-60 year old home that is not architecturally significant and does little to integrate in to the neighborhood. We attempted in our design, to present a pleasing unified linear facade, concealing the garage and integrating landscape elements. A simple palette of materials consisting of a wood slat screen wall provides privacy and conceals the garage doors, integrating them into the street facade. The entry is depressed into the volume of the house and partially screened by landscape. Glass walls at the entry area face the street with the intention of opening a portion of the facade to the street.
Behind the house is the very busy Highway 1. The house opens up completely with glass walls to a rear yard / pool area, raised above Highway 1 to create the illusion that the house sits on a cliff above the ocean on the other side of the highway 1. We wanted the occupants to feel they are not really in a densely developed tract next to the busy highway 1 behind, but perched on the cliff, across the highway, above the ocean amid the lush vegetation designed into the landscape of back yard and rear portion of the lot. An outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven is off to one side of the yard.
To accommodate program elements requested by the client within the allowable residential floor area, we created a basement that opens into an interior light well that is both an outdoor sitting space filled with lush plants and a direct connection to the outdoors, making the occupants feel they are not actually down in a basement.

Design for Integration
This project was designed to fit into a densely developed tract, replacing a 50-60 year old home that is not architecturally significant and does little to integrate in to the neighborhood. Design for Water
We designed the landscape to filter the roof and hardscape water runoff during rains, before it drains to the ocean across the highway. The landscape also is designed to allow some runoff to percolate in to the ground water.
