Project Description:
The core design was to relocate an olive tree that holds sentimental value right into the heart of the project, in turn creating stippled light that playfully dances throughout the courtyard. Working within strict community guidelines and codes, the goal was to utilize the site while still creating a special architectural moment that connects each aspect of the home.
Steel framed fenestration provides a visual link throughout the home, allowing the family to always feel connected regardless the zone or floor. A courtyard plan was chosen to provide light deep into the plan and to the lower level, in addition creating a private moment upon entry.
The tree's mature height aligns with the guardrail height, allowing one to simply reach out and pick the olive fruit directly off the tree. During the festival period, the tree is wrapped in string lights and acts the perfect backdrop to family life.
The upper floor provides single level living, complete with large open plan living room, discrete bedroom wing and garage. The basement provides a sound attenuated spot for late night movies, gym soundtracks and music collaborations.
Design for Integration, Design for Energy, Design for Well-being, Design for Resources
The home incorporates several thoughtful strategies aimed at long-term performance, comfort, and material responsibility. Cross-ventilation is used throughout to reduce reliance on mechanical cooling, supported by over-insulated walls that help maintain interior temperatures year-round. A large solar array, combining both photovoltaic and hydro technologies, offsets the home’s energy use and contributes to a more self-sustaining system. Heating is delivered through underfloor and in-wall systems, providing efficient thermal comfort without the need for ductwork or forced air.
Material selection focused on local availability and natural performance. Earth clay wall plaster was used not only for its breathability but also for its ability to support indoor air quality and regulate humidity. The plaster’s natural composition contributes to a calming interior environment without synthetic finishes. A recessed courtyard at the lower level offers a quiet, protected outdoor space that encourages personal retreat and reflection, while also drawing light and air deeper into the home. Together, these decisions reflect a practical approach to energy use, occupant health, and material efficiency without relying on high-maintenance systems or imported solutions.
