Project Description:
Cadence Park was envisioned as a village of buildings, each with a unique architectural character and program serving the Great Park neighborhoods. The park is comprised of three districts: one for play, one for watersports, and the heart of the project for art.
Cadence Park is simply one node in the larger context of a neighborhood “Art Walk,” where the community comes together to take part and create art in this larger expression of the landscape. The design approach was to create an arts village within the community; each building representing and containing its own individual arts program, including visual arts, literary arts, and performing arts.
The primary gathering space is centered around a lowered courtyard to set it apart from the remainder of the park and create a protected agora for outdoor gatherings and events. The arts buildings are clustered together to further create a visually protected space, and there are varied elevations throughout the park to provide an overlook and staging opportunities for performances. Programming within each of the buildings is scheduled to run in coordination with the adjacent schools, immersing neighborhood children in the arts.
Each building is a unique expression of wood cladding so that each may be differentiated but still tied together through the base materiality. Additionally, each building employs a unique roof form to further separate them from the rest. The literary arts building is based on a traditional gabled house form, modified to bring in natural light through glazed walls. An open ceiling expresses the volume implied by a traditional house form but rarely experienced in a traditional home. In the visual arts studio, one step removed from the gable roof is a shed roof form. Each side of the studio space allows openings to expansive outdoor spaces. On the courtyard side, a series of intimate individual doors open out, while on the park side, the entire wall opens to a generous terrace space for outdoor arts programs. The performing arts building has the most abstracted roof form, employing a butterfly roof on the diagonal to create four shed roof façades. The resulting interior space embodies the movement of dance through the dynamic relationship of the roof and walls, while also providing for superior acoustics during musical performances. Both sides of the building open out to courtyard spaces, one for smaller performances and one into the central agora.
