Square Footage: 20000
Building Use: Affordable Housing
Location: Irvine, CA
Project Description:
Many of the suburban cities were originally planned in areas with low population density and land was widely available. Commercial activities were developed within super blocks separated by multi-lane streets with excessively wide medians. These street medians are not properly maintained due to budget cuts and various funding issues and they become aesthetically unpleased over time.
As the population of these cities expanded, they became much denser and land value skyrocketed as a result. How do cities satisfy the high demand for housing especially in communities where land is extremely limited? The projects explores the possibility of reclaiming the “unusual” pocket spaces and transform them into housing and community nodes. It also aimed to create a compact housing model that focuses on public transportation and a sense of community.
