Judges' Comments
- The jury applauded the monumental scale and strong concept of this project noting it as one of the most compelling interiors submitted. The roof and skylight strategy is powerfully used to great effect and its geometry is reinforced in the design of other interior elements. Clearly designed for people and activity, the resulting space appears dynamic and collaborative.
Project Data:
Completion Date: 8/14/2017
Square Footage: 25286
Building Use: Campus Reception Lobby with Collaborative Event Space
Location: Irvine, CA
Project Description:
This location for a leading medical device manufacturer responds to a desire to create a campus where one did not previously exist while doubling the overall staff size. After purchasing the existing 32-acre corporate site in Irvine California, a master plan was completed creating a new vision by adding 150,000 square feet of office, research and manufacturing space and replacing surface lots with parking structures. The result is the creation of over 14-acres of new landscape, recreation, and outdoor amenity spaces.
The “Atrium” is envisioned as a distinct focal point for the newly branded campus. Functionally this space includes a full-service coffee and grab and go café, private meeting rooms, collaborative digital meeting spaces, museum elements and media displays, large scale projection capabilities and reception lobby.
This new event space is meant to provide a center to the newly created campus plan. The 25,286 SF “Atrium” was conceived as an arrival point and gateway to the campus for visitors and a social and collaborative gathering space for the staff including the 1000 employee quarterly meetings. Replacing an undersized and underwhelming lobby and cafeteria, the Atrium, is situated between two existing office structures and serves as a unique connection between the visitor reception lobby and the heart of the corporate campus.
The design challenge was to create a space which could accommodate the larger quarterly meetings while still working effectively for the day to day collaborative and social needs of the staff. The solution included a sculptural stadium seating focal piece that could accommodate over 500 people when needed but also comfortably and effectively addressed smaller groups and functions. This feature element incorporates lighting, access to the second level spaces and corporate branding. To facilitate larger groups as well as a limited vertical dimension, a unique “truss net” clear span structural system was developed which enabled a column free space as well as a shallow structural depth maximizing the space’s volume. The “truss net” also became a driving force in the aesthetic nature of the design providing interesting shadow patterns and lighting effects. The dramatic interior space connects effortlessly to the exterior campus through the integration of a large-scale vertical bi-fold door. The large door accommodates the physical loading and unloading of the space and promotes natural ventilation.
The project is tracking a LEED Platinum rating and employs a variable air volume, thermal displacement ventilation (TDV) air distribution strategy. The TDV approach provides for quiet, comfortable, and efficient supply air delivery that supports the high volume, assembly occupancy space. Supply air diffusers in the Atrium space are integrated with perforated metal panels along interior walls, allowing for a ceiling that is free of HVAC ductwork, diffusers, and grilles. With structure and systems visibly minimized, the space assumes an almost sculptural quality which changes in mood throughout the day due to an abundance of filtered natural daylight captured by the linear skylight that runs the length of the Atrium. The Atrium transcends its intended use to become a true heart of both the social and professional aspects of the organization.
