Completion Date: 10/29/2018
Square Footage: 45000
Building Use: Recitals, Music Performance and Practice, Classrooms, Academic Offices
Location: Irvine, California
Project Description:
The design fulfills the program objectives of creating a new home for the Music Department, Worship Arts and Christ College in a new building while renovating and expanding the existing Concordia University Center to more fully serve its significant role as the main campus worship space and sanctuary, auditorium and performance venue.
The new Music Worship and Theology Building is conceived as two interconnected elements – one housing the acoustically sensitive music recital and rehearsal spaces – the other a more typical academic ensemble of instructional spaces, faculty offices, library, conference space and support.
The building creates a new campus quad or court with the existing Library / Arts Building and the CU Center. This new campus-gathering place – the Arts Court - will become the focus of this portion of the campus offering shaded gathering, a location for outdoor performance and events, and linking Music to the other Arts programs. A covered Passage – between the Music and Christ College wings - links the new Arts Court with the lower campus and athletic fields, while also accommodating covered, outdoor activities, events and performances.
Christ College – the campus School of Theology – gains a new identity in its two level academic facility. A defined entry leads to a two-level central stair interconnecting the Dean, Faculty, Staff, Library and Classrooms of this significant campus entity. An upper level conference center opens to covered exterior terraces overlooking the Arts Court.
The Music Department occupies the western portion of the new building – providing an acoustically sophisticated environment and spaces for Orchestra, Choir and Handbell recitals, rehearsal halls, a recording studio, practice rooms, faculty studios and music/choral library.
The building terraces down the sloping site connecting the main campus Quad and CU Center to the new court. Christ College occupies a two level structure with a first or main floor level connecting to the new three level Music wing. Music is organized around a main performance lobby connecting the two large rehearsal/recital halls with the new Arts Court and the Main Recording Studio at the lower level. An expansive connecting roof joins the two program elements physically, programmatically and theologically – while also recalling the form of the iconic CU Center Sanctuary.
Designed with a strong commitment to sustainability, energy and resource conservation, the new building includes shaded facades, photovoltaics, highly energy efficient HVAC and lighting, daylighting throughout all spaces, natural ventilation, sustainably designed site and landscape, significant on-campus water conservation measures and sustainable, recycled material use.
