Project Description:
The Hoag Irvine Health and Wellness Village transforms an existing regional hospital tower surrounded by surface parking into a walkable campus of lower-scaled buildings connected by meaningful, programmed outdoor space. Inspired by William Pereira’s original master plan for the City of Irvine, which conceived of the city as a collection of villages connected by a system of regional parks, the plan balances indoor and outdoor environments to create a healthcare experience that is both experiential and efficient, connected to nature and technology (‘high-touch’ and ‘high-tech’).
The $1B Village will include new state-of-the-art specialty care centers for surgical innovation, cancer, digestive, and women’s health, in addition to dedicated urgent care services for cancer patients. The six new buildings will house 155 inpatient beds, eight operating rooms, and 120,000 square feet of ambulatory facilities. The primary medical functions are supplemented by amenity programs and outdoor spaces that draw inspiration from hospitality, retail, college campus, and recreational environments to create an experience for patients and caregivers that is unique to its place.
By leveraging the mild Southern California climate, outdoor spaces become an integral part of a continuum of care- where the landscape design is an active element in the healing process. This happens at a variety of scales: from the large outdoor wellness park to human-scaled moments of respite that serve to counter the stress and uncertainty of hospital care.
The physical separation of buildings with landscape and a three-story limit to most of the campus architecture ensures that all patient zones have access to natural daylight and views. The resulting massing relates to the neighborhood scale of the surrounding community and compliments Hoag’s institute-based approach to care, allowing for better specialization of services and a tailored experience for patients and staff.
Framework for Design Excellence
Design for Ecosystems
The Wellness Village vastly improves on the existing site conditions by consolidating parking into two high-density structures, freeing up valuable land currently used as surface parking. The post-development condition significantly increases the area of permeable landscape open spaces with dozen of dedicated gardens that will help with the healing of patients while offering micro-ecosystems for birds, pollinator insects and other species.
Design for Well-Being
A few features of the design include:
- The concept was inspired by the well-known Irvine Master Plan by William Pereira which conceived the city as a cluster of small villages interconnected by nature.
- Indoor-outdoor connections are introduced wherever possible, including decks, courts, gardens, plazas, and a small park.
- A group of seven low scale buildings surrounded by nature versus the traditional podium and tower hospital typology.
- Service and flow of technical services will happen underground via tunnels, freeing up valuable space for the patient experience at ground level.
- Natural light and views to nature were a priority in the design, both for patients, families, and caregivers.
- A wellness park features light exercise stations and connection to the local river recreation area'
- The pedestrian experience was prioritized over proximity of parking, implementing remote parking via a valet system
Design for Economy
- The model of stand-alone buildings for inpatient and outpatients allows the outpatient portions to be design more efficiently without the expensive restrictions required for inpatient facilities in California (HCAI)
