Project Data:

Completion Date:     11/1/2022

Square Footage:      390000

Building Use:           Workspace

Project Description:

The new Anduril Industries Headquarters is located in the historic LA Times printing press facility in Costa Mesa, CA and includes 390,000 square feet of interior fit-out. This series of industrial buildings features unique details, striking high-volume spaces, and highlights this distinctive shell while creating a cohesive and dynamic design. The primary phases were completed in 2022, with additional phases currently under construction.

Throughout the campus, the interiors nod to industrial detailing, bold and natural hues, and clean lines inspired by their products. The program supports various workplace functions including individual and co-working spaces, a product showroom, client experience spaces, a gym, library, and a food hall. New architectural volumes inserted into the historic shell establish legible circulation and landmarks while creating privacy for work areas. Each building incorporates a “hero” moment—a floating conference room over the product showroom, a hidden speakeasy, and a dramatic atrium breakroom.

Bountiful natural light, exterior finishes incorporated into the interior, and outdoor collaboration areas reinforce the client’s emphasis on wellness as a natural part of living and working in southern California. The lighting emphasizes each building’s architectural leans into efficiency. At one open area, light fixtures strung on tension cables span fifty feet to avoid a plethora of suspension cables and create a clean area for other utilities to cross. The campus experience as a whole is a sequence of moments of compression and expansion between the lower and higher volume spaces—creating dynamic movement and a sense of awe.

Framework for Design Excellence

The new Anduril headquarters has employee wellness and comfort at top of mind. Some strategies for wellness included an emphasis on equitable access to natural light, blending of indoor and outdoor environments, and promotion of active movement through the building. In order to create psychological safety and comfort, the buildings were closely designed to facilitate legibility and ease of navigation – a challenging task in a campus of so many structures stitched together. Variety of light levels, colors, and types of work areas provide choice for neurotypical and neurodivergent employees alike. Open volumes of prospect and social activity are balanced with respite and refuge in smaller scale zones.
