Upon entry, the home welcomes visitors with expansive views of the Pacific Oceans and the Island of Catalina. A large sunken central courtyard with floor to ceiling Euroline Doors and Windows allow ample light to filter throughout the first and lower level. The main level consists of the kitchen and butler’s pantry as well as the master suite, guest suite and office. Rich and durable materials were used to soften and warm the large open floor plan. Cedar beams are used to help transition the user through various spaces and separate private use areas. The lower level consists of three secondary suites, a gym, theater, bar, lounge wine room and game/media room. The large floor to ceiling glass creates a direct connection to outdoor game and lounge areas. With the terraced lot, exterior spaces are located at various strategic levels create separate entertainment throughout the property. Pool Level is directly below the exterior main level and master suite, a lower lounge area with a fire pit uses the exterior wall of the raised pool wall for privacy, and the lower courtyard which has direct connection to the bar gym and game areas help flow through out those spaces for outdoor activities and a large focal custom made sculpture piece that was designed for the clients for this specific location on the house. The design intent was to create a warm and inviting home that could be enjoyed by all users and has been thoroughly captured in its overall flow and connection to the site.
Framework for Design Excellence
The Orrington Residence was meticulously crafted to promote a healthy lifestyle, enhance occupant comfort, foster a strong connection between people and their surroundings, and allow a harmonious interaction with nature. The floor-to-ceiling glazing allows ample natural light to permeate the interior spaces and reduces the need for artificial lighting. The use of slider doors provide a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, and while open, they allow fresh air to circulate throughout the house, enhancing indoor quality and creating a sense of connection with the outdoors. The design of the house was focused on the lower central courtyard, which allows for natural light and ventilation throughout the entirety of the basement. The basement also serves as the location of multiple programs that serve the well-being of the occupants. The gym encourages physical activity and a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. A dedicated media room offers a space for relaxation and entertainment. The backyard is terraced to align with the sloping topography and increase the layers of program and how the occupants interact with the spaces. By integrating the house with its surroundings easy access to outdoor spaces on both levels, occupants are encouraged to develop a deeper connection with the environment.
