Project Description:
Sunset Glenoaks Studios is a state-of-the-art, purpose-built movie and television studio facility in Sun Valley, California. It comprises 232,680 square feet on over 10 acres, making it the first large-scale, purpose-built studio development in Los Angeles in more than 20 years. It features seven sound stages totaling 117,027 square feet with up to 40-foot clear heights to the sound stage hanging grids.
The sculptural entry gateway provides a welcoming transition from the public domain to Sunset Glenoaks Studios while iconic barrel-vault roof structures with arched bowstring wood trusses express the functional profile of the sound stages. The wood bowstring trusses provide efficient long-span sound stage structures with non-reflective acoustic performance. The studio is designed to support maximum efficiency of access and movement for production crews.
The studio facility includes four 3 and 4-story production support buildings totaling 92,337 square feet of production office and support space consisting of dressing rooms, hair & makeup, wardrobe, green rooms, writers’ rooms, conference rooms, executive offices, and open office space. The production support buildings are attached to the sound stage buildings to provide secure direct access from the dressing rooms and green rooms into the stages. All floors of the production support buildings have large windows to allow access to natural light into the workspaces and views outside.
A 3-story mill/shop & storage building provides 26,658 square feet for set construction and general storage. The site provides 446 parking stalls and convenient truck loading as well as bicycle parking in a private and secure lot overlooking dramatic hillside views.
Design for Energy, Design for Resources, Design for Change
The reimagined studio campus has been environmentally designed to achieve a LEED Silver rating. The studio has a Certified rating by Wired Score which confirms the quality of Mobile and Wireless Connectivity, Building Infrastructure, Telecommunications, Electrical Resiliency, and Digital Connectivity. The Embodied Carbon Analysis identified an overall reduction of 14.6% in Embodied Carbon Emissions from Baseline that includes 42% for low carbon concrete / cement, 31% in steel & rebar, 5% in gypsum and plaster, 5% in wood, 4% in aluminum, and 3% in insulation.
The design of Sunset Glenoaks Studios is respectful of the use of Energy and Resources as well as providing very flexible spaces for production companies’ diverse operational needs and technological innovations in a sustainable creative campus.
