Design for Integration, Design for Well-being
DESIGN INTEGRATION:
The architectural design of solarium & pool house addition (due to its size and location) is aimed to be responsive to a complex client's program, site constraints and environmental conditions as well as the city of Newport Beach zoning ordinance. These additions are to a 10,000 sq. ft. existing residence of 50 years old with a style of architecture that resemble the iconic plantation home of Gone With The Wind. The design aim was to blend the new solarium of 3,139 sq. ft. and a new pool house of 1,505 sq. ft. to the existing majestic mansion.
The project consists of demolishing the existing ice cream parlor wing of about 917 sq. ft.; addition of a new solarium of 3,139 sq. ft., a new pool house 1,505 sq. ft. with new enclosed bathrooms, a new kitchen extension of 433 sq. ft. with a new pantry of 61 sq. ft., a trash enclosure 50 sq. ft., and an electrical closet 18 sq. ft. The project is currently under construction and anticipated to completion within the next 8 month. These additions are to a 10,000 sq. ft. existing residence of 50 years old with a style of architecture that resemble the iconic plantation home of Gone With The Wind.
The new additions of Solarium & Pool House (due to its size and location) had to be seismically isolated from the Main House structure by 4" in the E-W direction and 2" in the N-S direction. This challenge dictated our team to creatively design aesthetically pleasing details to blend the new additions to the existing Main House.
DESIGN FOR WELL-BEING:
The Solarium intended uses are: family lounge, reading, tea service, and meditation area. In harmony with its surroundings and environmental context, and also to accommodate the active social life style of the residents, the Solarium and Pool House is designed to accommodate various social and cultural activities, swimming with various water-sports activities including a waterfall - all utilizing natural materials and colors.
