Project Description:
The Kinesiology and Athletics, Aquatics Pavilion is a testament to the power of teamwork. This project was a product of a truly collaborative effort between OCC’s Kinesiology and Athletics division and the Project team. During the early stages, the Division’s goals were defined through visionary and programming exercises and include: the facility is to be the iconic front face of the athletics precinct on the college campus; the facility is to support the diverse community; the facility is to be state of the art supporting OCC’s strong program. Other subsidiary goals included providing a facility that national teams and future Olympians can access to complete in and practice. These identified goals served to guide the team in tackling site and budgetary constraints throughout the project in a swift and efficient manner.
The project was conceptualized with the simple design concept of “movement” to reflect a key characteristic of both kinesiology and athletics human body in motion. Movement is reflected in the architectural elements that flow from the Northern welcoming wing of Division Offices and Athletic Training to the Southern end facilitating the Aquatic part of the complex, with the spectator seating to the west in order to maximize seating and visibility. Movement is also expressed through moments of featured elements and how these materials behave throughout the facility. The complex also houses programs such as Adapted PE, Equipment Management, Locker and Team Rooms, Cardio and Exercise Rooms.
The Pavilion in total consists of a site of approximately 113,00 SF, 37,650 GSF of conditioned program, a 9,250 GSF Shade Canopy, a 65M x 75’ Competition Pool, and a 25-yard x 75’ Instructional pool.
This facility supports wellbeing through the use of ample natural daylighting in the main circulation core, the use of a blue accent color to uplift spirits and reinforce the concept of water, and through the use of warm materials such as wood steel panels and ‘wave wall’ finishes. This facility innately due to its program also supports health and wellbeing not only for the athletes but also for individuals who have limited mobility, hence also providing a space that fosters equitable and diverse communities that extend beyond the college community.
