Project Data:
Completion Date: 1/1/2019
Square Footage: 280000
Building Use: Ice sports and recreation complex. NHL Anaheim Ducks and US Figure Skating training facility
Design Architect: LPA Design Studios
Project Description:
The Great Park Ice and FivePoint Arena combines the largest community ice complex in California with a new training facility for the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks and the United States Figure Skating Team. The building features four indoor ice rinks — three NHL regulation rinks and one Olympic regulation rink— a full-service restaurant and sports bar, a pro shop, a café and a gym. The project is certified LEED Silver.
Approach
The team set out to redefine what this typology should be in Southern California’s mild and sunny climate. We focused on giving users a broader experience, beyond the ice rinks, while challenging the paradigm that these facilities are intrinsically poor energy performers. The result is a design that balances indoor with outdoor amenities and performs 41% better than the California Energy Code baseline.
Design for Integration: Concept/The Phases of Water
The phases of water inspired the idea parti into three distinct zones: Exterior (Vapor), Lobby (Liquid) and Ice rinks (Solid). Each zone has its own set of parameters (temperature, humidity) and visual character, creating a unique sensory experience as people move from the outdoors and through the building.
Design for Equitable Communities: Community Engagement
The project aims to promote health and wellness through ice sports within the Orange County community. It houses high-quality ice sports programming and activities, including youth and adult hockey leagues, figure skating, regional and national tournaments and competitions, as well as open public recreational skating, group skates, broomball and curling leagues. Additionally, the facility offers a free program “Learn to Play Hockey” for underprivileged kids and adults. The amphitheater outside the FivePoint arena is used throughout the year for outdoor learning, fitness classes, training and local neighborhood events.
Design for Equitable Communities: Context
The 688-acre Great Park is the centerpiece of a residential community on the site of a former Marine Corps Air Station. The 13.5-acre site for the Ice and Sport Complex was planned by the City of Irvine on the northwest corner of the park. A public-private partnership was then established to develop the site for this project. The building was sited to open to the park, creating a dialogue with the other future sport facilities and delineating and edge to the residential community beyond. The facility will become publicly-owned by the City of Irvine after 50 years.
Design for Water: Site/Outdoor water use reduction
Other than the ‘Meadow’ which was designed as an informal practice field, the rest of the landscape is drought-tolerant. Overall potable water reduction was 35% (per LEED credits).
Design for Energy: Energy Modeling
The 2,500-seat space was designed for multiple sports and exhibition events. A pre-engineered high-performance envelope was used to increase the thermal efficiency and reduce the costs of operating and maintaining the ice sheet, which are notorious water and energy consumers. The mechanical system reclaims process water and a dehumidifier recycles the heat generated. An EUI improvement of 42% over baseline was achieved.
