Completion Date: 2/2/2015
Square Footage: 7400
Building Use: Office Space
Location: Costa Mesa, CA
Project Description:
Stretched across the sawtooth edge of 3200 Park Center is the new office headquarters for the re-branded Lojistic. The 7,400 sf office space overlooks the expansive California Scenario (Noguchi Garden) while neighboring both the 405 freeway and South Coast Plaza.
Core objectives driving the project design were: design for growth, design for new roles and establish new working modes for both new employees and existing. The design explores 3 different private office types in addition to the open office typology. A war room, exposed break room and break out areas round out the program.
Early and frequent Architect/Client interactions resulted in two key quotes that framed the design:
"Polished with grainy roots"
&
"A big brand bear hug!"
Highlighting the new office are two custom fabrications that define space and create special moments.
One, the result of a conceptual package traveling from point A to point B. The concept then abstracted through the patterning of a Grasshopper script and Rhino. Exploring the sandwich of surfboard resin + blue burlap + birch plywood + white buckram + surfboard resin. And finished off with the caring hands of a local fabricator.
Two, that "big brand bear hung" put into the context of anamorphic design. The company's new logo was CNC'd into reclaimed barn siding as the fins of four screens placed throughout the office.
Underlying sustainable elements subtly interweave throughout the project. There are the main baseline elements such as no VOC paints, Cradle To Cradle carpet flooring and LED lighting. Then there is the idea of using less, or none at all. The project reduced new flooring coverage by 34% and ceiling coverage by 31%. In addition, all the locally fabricated workstations used raw steel in lieu of adding typical coatings. Next, stay local. Most finish items you see are by local fabricators and artisans with less than 10 miles. The large conference table top did come from the East coast, however a horse and buggy were used for part of the journey!
In the end, this project embodies CREATING a great setting for great people to enjoy working together!
