Project Description:
The Evening Canyon Residence advances the idea of indoor/outdoor living with its transformative design. Operable facades, natural light and layers of transparency help remove the physical barriers creating better connections to the outdoors while framing the protected views from the second level. The style straddles the line between contemporary and modern, and the materials solidifying the strong gestures of the design.
In the front of the home, the massing on either side on the front elevation pulls apart. This gives way to the wood overhang which floats atop a zinc clad wall framing the two-story storefront ultimately creating the welcoming vestibule at the entry.
Passing through the large glazed entry, the layers of the first floor pull your eyes through the home to the rear yard. The bonus room and gym are secluded off the rear yard and a one and a half story wine wall takes focus in the gallery. Next to the wine feature an intermediate column of natural light from a skylight and glass floor invites you up to the second level where the living spaces are located. Early on in the design process the clients asked for a special place to display a family instrument, a baby grand piano. Situated on the glass floor the piano is on display from all sides.
The location of the site yields to an abundance of ocean and treetop views which increase as you elevate from level to level. The open floor plan of the second level allows for transparency beyond the dining and parlor, and through the great room over the restrained heights of the surround vegetation and home. Entering the great room and kitchen the southern light is directed onto the ceiling with a larger light shelf and overhang covering the rear deck space. The living space opens up to the deck with disappearing doors and the transformation of walls. The drama of removing a barrier is elevated with the large steel tilt-up door bookending the kitchen. The manual crank system, which is a work of art in itself, tilts the door with the bottom ¾ cantilevered out over the deck.
With better views at higher elevations a roof top deck was incorporated, capturing 180° of the Pacific Ocean, Catalina Island and the surround village of Corona del Mar.
Altogether this home consists of 5 bedroom suites, 2 powder rooms, an office, bonus room, gym, laundry, dining, parlor, great room, kitchen, butler’s pantry and various outdoor spaces. The home is just over 6,000 sq./ft. of living with a 4-car garage of 800 sq./ft.
