Project Description:
Our client, a global medical technology company that develops and manufactures innovative noninvasive patient monitoring technologies, decided it was time to build a new space for its growing company in 2011. At the time, the headquarters were located off of Bake Parkway and Irvine Boulevard and were situated between three buildings. While the buildings were adjacent, the multi-building configuration posed certain logistical challenges and growth constraints to the company. Our client’s CEO desired a single headquarters facility to accommodate all of his employees under one roof while still providing room for future growth.
In order to rebrand the new headquarters, the design team updated the building layout and structure to facilitate for a more natural work environment. With a well-being atmosphere being of utmost importance, the inspiration behind this design was to fuse the indoors and outdoors to create a workplace that promotes healthy lifestyles. The open front of the building was designed to allow employees to enjoy the Southern California environment with a deck that extends over the water at the front of the building and a central garden space inside. The project team was able to reallocate existing warehouse space, opening it up to create a new central garden area, which gives outdoor views that can be seen from the interior floorplate. Topography sprinkled with trees, green walls, and grass creates intimate meeting areas and informal work zones right outside of the office. Walkways throughout the garden connect each of the different office departments, providing a stress free area for employees to enjoy during the workday.
Overhanging the atrium garden is a mezzanine, which provides a significant amount of office space for the R&D employees. Because the mezzanine does not count toward the total number of employees for the entitlement process, our client was able to fulfill their goal of not only having their employees situated on one campus but under one roof. An indoor/outdoor café straddles the boundary of the garden creating a social hub that doubles as a gathering place for staff events. The existing auditorium now opens to a new conversation deck over a pond with koi fish and island. In the second warehouse, an exterior corner was remade into a new gym and wellness center that connects to a looping walking path surrounding the site. Through diligent efforts from the client and design team; the new headquarters breathes new life into one of the most iconic and distinctive properties in the Irvine Spectrum.
