Building Use: COMMUNITY VISION PLAN
Location: SANTA ANA, CA
Project Description:
The South Main Street Corridor (SMSC), located in the heart of Orange County, is a unique and historic business district serving a multitude of communities both locally and regionally. The history of the South Main Street Corridor mirrors that of Orange County as a whole. Once a rural, agricultural community, the area experienced successive waves of suburban development throughout the twentieth century. The Study Area for the South Main Street Vision Plan, (which encompasses the entirety of the SMSC,) currently includes businesses serving a variety of different customer bases. Auto-oriented businesses, (such as vehicle sales and repair,) serve city-wide and regional customers. Pedestrian-oriented businesses, (such as bakeries, small-to-medium-sized grocers, and beauty salons,) serve customers living in adjacent residential neighborhoods. There is a strong sense of a building momentum to realize the transformation of the SMSC into a much more prominent destination within the City. The creation of this Vision Plan was meant to provide guiding documentation of ideas for future implementation.
The South Main Street Vision Plan (SMSVP) will provide a creative & implementable vision for South Main Street in Santa Ana, identifying physical, regulatory & programmatic interventions utilizing over $4.7 million in funding to support and enhance the residential & business communities along the corridor. The planning approach of this Vision Plan reflects the diversity of South Main Street, creates connections between communities and reinforces the importance of being a walkable district. To most effectively utilize the available funding, the project team proposed a visionary approach which target key Focus Areas within the overall SMSC Study Area. The implementation of this approach will serve as a proving-ground for innovative improvements and serve as a catalyst for future development. Improvements proposed as part of the SMSVP include both context-specific elements, (which can reflect the unique character of each Focus Area), and common elements, (which will provide continuity throughout the SMSC).
This entry showcases a brief selection of the pages included in the 120+ page SMSVP issued in June 2016 and serves as a high-level summary of the general scope and design goals being proposed. During the creation of the SMSVP the project team conducted in-depth analysis of the existing conditions, demographics and needs, while simultaneously working in conjunction with municipal representatives, residents and business owners to ensure all voices where being heard. The SMSVP is the result of this collaborative effort and should prove to be a powerful tool to help policymakers implement substantive change within the SMSC.
