Building Use: Residential
Location: Big Bear, CA
Project Description:
Set along the shores of Big Bear Lake with vistas of ski slopes and pristine waters, this modern cabin sets itself apart from the typical residential lifestyle in this mountain community. Continuous sightlines, natural light, and privacy were some of the owner’s program requirements. Tucked into a tight cul-de-sac, the home maximizes the site’s panoramic views and sense of privacy by orienting the home’s main living space towards the lake and Snow Summit. A study in contrasts, the cabin is both dark and light, minimalist yet warm; open, but fundamentally private.
As you approach the cabin you immediately sense its difference - a cabin cloaked in burnt cypress and black plaster is not your everyday experience in Big Bear. While its physical appearance is definitely distinctive, it echoes the surrounding mountain landscape and anchors the home to the site through color and texture. Natural mountain boulders are the oasis for the color of the home. The timber construction blends seamlessly with the scenic beauty of the Alpine forest. Inside, the exposed beam structure relates to the crafted quality of a mountain cabin and defines the line between contrasting materials – dark wood, light plaster walls. Oversized exterior doors provide a direct connection outside and delivers an abundance of natural light. Its modern, and minimal interiors are not what is expected as you enter the massive two-story high glass entry; however the picturesque backdrop of the surroundings create a place of sanctuary. Uniquely simple, the homes minimalism flows effortlessly form space to space alongside comfortable materials designed to relax the busy family.
Photo voltaic panels and rain capture systems are integrated into the design along with life safety systems, in a seamless way. A destination point unto itself the cabin provides an ideal spot for relaxation as well as many adventures that Big Bear offers.

Description
The jury admired the singular form of the building and how a clear idea is carried all the way through the home. The exposed structure compliments the design idea and helps support the architect's careful weaving of a modern aesthetic into a traditional house form.
Congratulations Gensler.
