Project Description:
Growth and execution of an idea: Our design team has developed a Campus Master Plan that builds upon the success and growth of the Pacific Ridge School. This design award submittal; “Phase I” of the Master Plan, is comprised of a new Academic Arts building, a new Middle School classroom building and a newly defined Campus Quad that connects the new buildings with the existing High School and its site features.
Creating beauty and spirit of place: The two new educational buildings; build upon the existing High School’s architectural language of material and form. New assembly space are double height volumes that are strategically positioned at the center of each new building. These double height assembly spaces open onto the campus quad and are visually expressed by large openings and wood cladded butterfly roof lines. Building materials, fenestrations, and the complimenting landscape palate unite the campus as a single expression, which strengthens the notion of community, campus, and reinforces the academic principles and brand of the Pacific Ridge School.
Strengthening campus and student community: The master planning process and building designs benefited from in-depth participation of students, faculty and active parents. The resulting campus and its buildings emulate the philosophy of Pacific Ridge, where “Every student gets a front row seat, and each child is heard.” The campus and its buildings are in an arrangement focused on collaboration and community, designed to foster participation and individual growth beyond the traditional classroom.
High Performance and Sustainability: This project has been recognized for high-performance design by the local utility savings by design program. Predicated energy cost reduction is 29% better than ASHRAE 90.1, which was achieved with ample day lighting, efficient VRF mechanical systems, and the ability for the new building’s classrooms to use mixed model and passive ventilation when weather conditions are appropriate. Hydro modification was a site design parameter, which drove our design of function and aesthetics. Sidewalks and plazas are open grid paving, while the new parking lot is permeable concrete. Roof drains lead into planter beds as bio filters, and the remaining landscape planting functions as filtration and a platform for student activity. Ninety-nine percent of the irrigation is sourced from reclaimed water while the remaining 1% is potable water for the student vegetable garden. The two new buildings reduce their potable water use by 37%.

Description
The jury noted that the quality of light is outstanding. Jurors admired the outdoor spaces and how the building embraced the surroundings. They also felt it was brave for the architect to push the envelope with the design for a school and were confident the building encourages learning.
Congratulations gkkworks.
