Completion Date: 5/1/2015
Square Footage: 5000
Building Use: Ambulatory Surgery Center
Location: San Francisco, CA
Project Description:
The San Francisco Vein and Vascular Institute is committed to the treatment of all aspects of vascular conditions. Their new 5,320 square-foot office space in an existing mixed-use high-rise building needed to be transformed into a vascular surgery clinic and ambulatory surgery center with Medicare Deemed Status.
An initial feasibility study was created prior to the signing of the lease. The design process included operational flow mapping and analysis and required approval from multiple stakeholders and doctors.
While the design dramatically lowers the cost of vascular surgery and improves patient outcomes, the key differentiator is a patient experience that focuses on the genuine interactions between patients and clinicians. The experience characteristics that played a major role in design include a calm, comfortable environment that was inviting, yet was professional and trustworthy.
The design reinforces safety and integrity of practice while maintaining a warm and comforting experience. This is accomplished through strategically programmed spaces to aid clear and sensible circulation and wayfinding. It provides continuity of design in the outpatient clinic and surgery center for seamless spatial and aesthetic user experience between spaces. A streamlined process is created through efficient and effective layout, while encouraging interaction. The selection of materials and finishes, as well as careful space-planning efforts, resulted in high value with low cost.
The project was delivered on an accelerated schedule: 4 weeks for planning and design, 4 weeks for construction documents, and 16 weeks of construction.
Key design goals included creating spaces for patients and their friends/family that support the experience characteristics at the “front of house” and do not show the hectic nature of the “back of house” as well as providing continuity of design in the outpatient clinic and surgery center for a seamless spatial and aesthetic user experience. The design helped to streamline workflow process through an efficient and effective layout while also accommodating the demographics of the patient population (70+ years old, elderly, sick, accompanied by friends/family).
The references to nature in the design elements help to minimize the stress of visiting a clinical setting. The unusual casework design plays on the theme of veins connecting and leading to the heart as well as the interconnectivity of the city streets and infrastructure that allow patients and physicians to connect to the Vein and Vascular Institute.

Description
The jury was particularly interested in the uncommon organization and planning of the post surgery recovery area. They noted how well the plan respects privacy of the patients.
Congratulations Taylor Design.
