The site includes four buildings that are part of a larger vision to revitalize the area by bring higher education and arts program from the local Community College to this long-neglected part of the City. The Culinary Arts Academy and District Offices Building located at the corner of the site is the final component in the completion of the District’s vision.
Design Description-Culinary Arts Academy & District Offices (CAADO)
This 3-story, 60,000-SF building will provide district and facilities offices and academic programs. The first floor will house the Culinary Arts Academy, classrooms, offices, broadcasting room, teaching kitchen and a dining area open to the public. The second and third floors house space for facilities, district offices and Chancellor’s suite. The accessible roof deck provides open air dining and an edible garden with views of downtown and the hills beyond. Building massing and proportions create a “transitional façade” that links the existing Central for Social Justice and new CAADO. The CAADO serves as a corner anchor for the entire block and features a roof form of “urban scale” dimensions. This element shades the east facade and protects the roof deck from direct sun. The roof deck is located at the high point of the block creating a focal point for night-time events complete with LED lighting that announces the building to the community.
Sustainability
The project received a LEED NC Silver rating in August of 2017 and given the program and the prominent location the team wanted to create a project that “displays” its sustainability to the community. The two-facades that address the street use a variety of louvers, solar canopy, spandrel glass and fritted glass to protect the building’s openings that maximizing the harvesting of natural light while announcing this unique program to students and the community.
