Judges' Comments
- The jury was impressed with the clarity of design, the strong organization, and thoughtful material palette of this project. The result is a rich but restrained design that doesn't feel overly institutional. The architect employed an effective narrative with the “Town to Trail” concept which came through in both the presentation and the final building.

Project Description:
BACKGROUND
Located off-site from the Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Campus, challenges with the acoustics of the space and the construction schedule were leveraged into opportunities on this tenant improvement project. Delivered on time and under budget despite an extremely tight construction schedule, the 38,788 square foot Roseville Behavioral Health Expansion is a tenant improvement project delivered below the given budget after three rounds of value engineering meetings. As an outpatient mental health clinic where adult and pediatric patients come for both individual and group setting counseling and treatment, the space was specifically leased to expand and enhance the campus’ Behavioral Health Services. The renovated space now provides Kaiser Permanente patients and staff with a safe and vibrant environment which promotes healing, minimizes stress and anxiety and creates a sense of community.
INSPIRED BY NATURE, EMPOWERING MEMBERS
Using Kaiser Permanente’s Total Health Toolkit and design excellence standards, a collaborative and team-centric approach resulted in a facility that is inspired by nature, empowering the member, visitor and caregiver by providing access to nature and fostering social interaction within a vibrant and uplifting environment. Access to natural light as a healing element was one of design drivers and provides workplace wellness and productivity. Acoustics were integrated seamlessly into the interiors, contributing to optimal building operations. Sound absorbing materials, coupled with strategic layout decisions at Check-In/Reception and in the Waiting Area reduce noise and protects privacy while enhancing the patient and visitor journey.
TOWN TO TRAIL CONCEPT
Inspired by the surrounding outdoor environment, a “Town to Trail” concept was developed. The Kaiser Permanente Roseville Behavioral Health Expansion creates a communal space that facilitates interaction and community — the ”Town”—while providing serene pathways— the ”Trails”—to promote recovery and rehabilitation. To support a tranquil atmosphere and reduce stress and anxiety, the interior finishes and organic patterns create intuitive way finding for patients, staff and guests as they make their way from the Welcome Center and through the waiting area, group therapy rooms and offices.
TOWN SQUARE
The waiting area represents the “Town Square” and provides opportunities for social interaction and active waiting, providing multiple seating postures and options. Seating alcoves and 3-D cutouts provide a sense of whimsy and play for pediatric patients. Beyond the Welcome Center, splashes of vibrant color with murals inspired by nature create a harmonious and healing environment. Spaces are light and uplifting, providing areas of respite along corridors for patients and guests, and places of retreat for staff in the midst of their day.
SUSTAINABILITY
Steps were taken to incorporate design features to meet Kaiser Permanente’s sustainability goals, including a day lighting study to incorporate day lighting wherever possible. Clear and translucent panels throughout the public spaces, coupled with the serene color palette, allow daylight to flood the space, even when a window is not within close proximity. Supporting the “Town to Trail” concept, the materials and textures in all functional areas connect the outdoors and natural elements to enhance and support the path to healing.
