Project Description:
This project is located in Del Mar along the southern California coast. The site is perched atop a rocky, wind swept promontory sharing an intimate relationship with the forces of nature acting upon it.
The owner's brief called for a relaxed family beach house. They desired a comfortable setting to engage with family and friends, while also enjoying the views and natural surroundings of the site. The benign coastal climate created the opportunity for the seamless integration of interior and exterior space.
Two diaphanous pavilions are configured in an “L” shape within the site, framing a central courtyard. The east-west pavilion is for private space containing bedrooms, baths and a study. The north-south pavilion contains communal space, the kitchen, dining and family rooms. The intersection of the two pavilions is a two-story space containing the entry and a sculptural stairway. From this space, one obtains a visual understanding of how the structure is organized.
Permanence and ephemerality are expressed through materiality and form. This duality is further instilled into the structure which is both expresses a sense shelter and an expansiveness into the immediate landscape. The formal massing of the structure is decidedly simple and restrained to facilitate contemplation of the land, sea and sky. Board formed concrete, corten steel and stucco integrate the structure into the natural textures and colors of the site.
The architect and the owner shared an interest in sustainability and so the design integrates concrete flooring to act as a passive, thermal heating and cooling system, roof mounted photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting, operable windows and large sliding doors to facilitate natural ventilation and low maintenance recycled materials for cabinetry and other interior finishes. Existing Torrey pines on site will be preserved and native landscaping will integrate the project with the rugged beauty of the natural desert that surrounds it.
