Project Description:
This Southern California coastal residence is located at a beach front community in Dana Point. The owner is the matriarch of a large family, and as such she desired a home for both private reflection, as well as communal space to entertain family and friends.
Upon arriving at the site, the home is read as a series of layered volumes, transparent, porous and opaque that define the entry sequence into the central courtyard. A series of adjustable wood louvers provide the desired amount of openness or privacy, while also framing discreet, cinematic views into the entry courtyard and the ocean beyond. The open plan, interior spatial configuration responds to the owner’s desire for flexibility and transformation.
The meditative intersection between sea and sky is the inspiration for this house. A subtle layering of form and materiality invite a play of light that awakens us to the variations of nature that are essential and constant. Indoor and outdoor living is orchestrated by balancing views with privacy, communal space with intimacy.
The architecture of the Coral Cove residence focuses on dissolving boundaries, framing views, and enhancing the experience of the rituals of everyday life. Indoor and outdoor living is orchestrated by balancing views with privacy, communal space with intimacy. A reductionist approach to form and materiality give priority to an atmosphere of meditation and tranquility, establishing direct contact with the sea.
